It could be said that Canada has one of the richest
hovercraft histories next to Great Britain. Ever since the invention of
the hovercraft Canada has played an integral role in the development of
this extraordinary mode of transportation. The Canadian Coast Guard
is renowned as one of the pioneers of search and rescue hovercraft
service and Transport Canada conducted
several studies which lead to discovering that hovercraft could be used
very effectively for ice breaking duties.
"The Great White North" has always been viewed as the
perfect place to showcase the hovercrafts capabilities and as an area
that could benefit greatly from the use of hovercraft. As a result
several companies were formed in Canada to develop craft for sale in
this country and around the world. Unfortunately most of those companies
no longer exist but the legacy of craft they left behind tell a story of
the evolution of hovercraft.
Below you will find information regarding
many of the companies and craft that came out of Canada. This
information has been obtained from sources throughout the world and
compiled by HCC member Bob Rennick.
