HL-101 Rubber Duck

The HL-101 Rubber Duck is a completely amphibious air cushion raft. Designed to be used as a ferry or ship-to-shore lighter over ice and water - capable of traversing soft mud, muskeg, broken or weak ice.  It could be folded, loaded and moved by road on one oilfield trailer without cranes.  Propulsion was via cable and on-board winch or external tractor tow.  The lift system was a Caterpillar 3208 197Hp diesel engine driving a single Joy Industrial steel fan.  The skirt was a 9" pitch segmented skirt made of hot-bonded natural rubber/nylon material.  It also featured a spray suppression skirt constructed of neoprene/nylon.
